Sasha-Loriene is our D.C. Artist of the Week. Sasha-Loriene is a first-generation Liberian immigrant. She is a contemporary artist, curator, community leader, and entrepreneur who has dedicated the last five years to positively influencing the matriculation of other Black women in the arts.
In addition to being a painter herself, Sasha-Loriene is the founder and CEO of Black Girls Who Paint (BGWP), which is a D.C. based organization that works to show Black girls who paint that the arts is a viable career path, and to empower the next generation of talented artists by providing resources and support. She began BGWP in 2017 after spending two years working in the corporate world and realizing that she was not following her true passions. Since its founding, BGWP has grown into a membership directory where artists can add their events and showcase their art, which creates an online gallery where patrons can contact the artist directly.
The second component of BGWP provides financial support through awards fund initiatives. BGWP gives away two e-gift cards every month to assist girls 6-18 with art supplies.
